"Ming" is an ideographic character consisting of a "ri" (sun) on the left and a "yue" (moon) on the right. Since it originally refers to the moment of daybreak after sunrise, it is then endowed with the meanings of brightness, resplendence as well as enlightenment or clearness, which are extended meanings out of the original sense.
As an old Chinese saying goes, "jianting zeming", which means that all parties shall be heard so as to ensure correct understanding or view towards things, while partial attitude will eventually lead to false judgment.
