"Ri" is a pictographic character. It is originally written in oracle bone inscriptions as a circle added with a dot in the middle and sketches of sunrays surrounded the circle. Then through evolvements, the character has become the one we see today in small seal script. Since a day is characterized by sunrise and sunset, the Chinese call "a day" as "yiri" (when used as a quantifier of time).
