By 2026 China plans to have built the world’s longest underwater tunnel, connecting Dalian in Liaoning Province to Yantai in Shandong Province. If the blueprint is approved by the State Council, work on the 123 km tunnel could begin in 2015/16. Currently the journey can only be done by an 8 hour ferry or a 1,400 km drive. The tunnel will act as a vital part of the high-speed rail network. It is estimated that the project will cost around $40 billion.
