Brief Introduction to Suihua University
Suihua University is a multi-disciplinary institution of higher learning under the direct leadership of Heilongjiang provincial government, currently taking teachers’ training as its main field of study and instruction, and combining science and technology with liberal arts in its teaching and research program. It grew out of the former Suihua Teachers School founded in 1953, Which was later, under the authorization of the State Council, upgraded to become Suihua Teachers College in 1978.
Suihua University is located in the city of Suihua, Heilongjiang, Northeast China, covering an area of 350,000 square meters, with an additional 252,255 square meter reserved land for further expansion, and a total floor space of 150000 square meters. It has 201 million yuan fixed assets, including 23.9million yuan worth of instrument and equipment, 56 laboratories for teaching research purposes, and more than 800 computers for teaching activities. It is equipped with highly modernized library and information retrieval systems, including a collection of 525,000 books, 527 Chinese and foreign language periodicals of various subjects, 110,000 electronic books, more than 5,000 various electronic periodicals, perfect CD retrieval system, automatic library integrated management system, electronic reading system, multi-media audio-visual system, network experiment system, large electronic screen information window, reader retrieval system and electronic inspection passage.
Suihua University now has ten departments: Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Technology, Chinese Language and Literature, Political Studies, History and Geography, Foreign Language, Physical Education, and Art Department, as well as one Information Center, one Audio-visual Teaching Center, Adult Education Department, and General Subjects Teaching and Research Section. Taking teachers training as its main field of study and instruction, Suihua University has 32 specialties, offering four-year and three-year undergraduate programs in Chinese Language and Literature, Political Studies and Education, History, Geography, English Language, Russian language with English as the Second Major, Music Education, Mathematics and Applied mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Art Design, Computer Multi-Media Network technology, Science of Law, tourism Management, and Applied Computer Technology, The university also maintains educational cooperation relations with Khabarovsk State Pedagogical University, Amur State University and Blagoveshensk State Pedagogical University in Russia.
In 2005 Suihua University enrolls students from 14 provinces and autonomous regions throughout the country. At present the total number of three-year and four-year program full-time students put together is 7,210,while the number of students who enroll in the adult education program is 2,298.
From 1978 on ward Suihua University has been involved in 50 provincial and higher level research projects undertaking 9 state level research projects, and published 55 monographs, 148 textbooks of various subjects, 2,030 academic papers. Other achievements include a State-Level Special Prize for Teaching Excellence, 24 provincial level Teaching Excellence Prizes, and 26 provincial and higher level research prizes.
Of its 571 staff, Suihua University has 327 full-time teachers, 25 professors and 121 associate professors, 5 visiting professors, 7 foreign teachers. 4 teachers enjoy State Council Special Subsidy, 1 teacher enjoys Special Subsidy from the provincial government. 6 teachers are winners of Zeng Xianzi Award for Excellent Teachers.
Suihua University takes as its major goal the training of qualified teachers and professionals with practical skills for Suihua and other areas in Heilongjiang Province to meet the local needs of economic construction and social development. It will also redouble its efforts to actively involve itself in scientific research, technological development, consultancy and service, and constantly conduct cooperation and exchanges with the outside world for the overall increased quality of instruction and students, and the enhanced comprehensive competitiveness.
