Beijing Union University (BUU) was established in 1985 by merging over thirty college branches of Peking University, Tsinghua University and other universities founded in 1978 in Beijing. BUU has become a fully-fledged university offering diversity of courses and specialties mainly for undergraduate programs and sticking to its philosophy of serving the needs of regional economic development as well. The university has produced over 80,000 graduates for the nation over twenty years time and made a great contribution to economic prosperity and social development in Beijing. It now is the key base designated by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission for training applicable talents and national key base granted by Ministry of Education for training vocational teachers. It currently has a total enrollment of about 30,000 students, of whom over 29,000 are attending full-time undergraduate courses, and nearly 10,000 taking adult education courses (including those studying for certificates and for taking self-study examinations). It newly recruited about 8,000 full-time students in the year 2004 of both undergraduate and vocational programs, which makes it No.1 in rankings in terms of college enrollment scale. With over 1,500 full-time teachers, 11 experts entitled to enjoy government special allowances, BUU also has a large group of scholars and guest teachers well known both at home and abroad, in addition to some excellent dual talents, e.g. both experienced practitioner in the industry and teacher. BUU consists of 17 colleges, adopting market-oriented principle in curriculum design to better satisfy the demands of Beijing’s economic construction and social development. There are altogether 53 disciplinary areas in undergraduate programs including three Key Construction Subjects of municipal level, Computer Application Technology, Economic Law, Food Science, and 72 specialties of higher vocational and technical education, including four Key Construction Subjects awarded by Ministry of Education, Computer Application Technology, Telecommunication Technology, Mechanical & Electricity Application Technology and Advertising, and 11 Key Construction Subjects of municipal level. Fully aware of the importance of creating work-related teaching environment, the University is now equipped with 6 experimental training bases invested by government and over 100 laboratories, advanced computer centers and modern multi-media classrooms. Great emphasis is laid on scientific research in the university. Over the years, BUU has undertaken many research projects at national and provincial level, many of which have achieved various awards. It now has 2 scientific research institutes of municipal level and 19 at university level. Adhering to internationalized school running ideology, BUU is very active in conducting education program cooperation and academic exchanges, and strengthening exchanges in science & technology and culture, and creating better environment for cultivating internationalized high quality talents.
