Hunan University of Technology has its origin in the Zhuzhou Institute of Technology. Zhuzhou Institute of Technology, established in 1979, has already experienced the changes from Zhuzhou University, China Packaging Engineering Institute and Zhuzhou Institute of Technology. It was subordinated originally to China National Packaging Corporation. Since the system reform of Chinese Higher Education in 2000, our university adopted a new system: jointly constructed by Hunan Provincial Government, China National Packaging Corporation and China Packaging Federation. This is a sole university characterized in packaging education in China and also known as “Flag of China Packaging Education”, “Cradle for Cultivating Packaging Talents in China” and “Scientific Research Base of China Packing”.

On December 29, 2005, the Ministry of Education organized a committee in Nanjing with 50 experts to audit and vote the status change of universities. Zhuzhou Institute of Technology had a full vote to change the status into Hunan University of Technology 

   Hunan University of Technology covers an area of 3,700 mus (mu, a Chinese nuit of area. 1 mu = 666.6 m2), which is divided into two parts: namely eastern campus and western campus. The western is a new campus now under construction and with an area of 2,619 mus. The university has now an existing building area of 742,000 m2, the total value of teaching apparatus and equipments up to RMB0.19 billion Yuan and a library with a collection of 1.94 million volumes. The number of its full-time students reaches 32,000, teaching staff increases to 2100, including 1450 full-time teachers in which 158 teachers have senior academic titles, 621 teachers have secondary academic titles, 102 teachers have doctoral degrees and 377 have master degrees. Besides, there are 402 teachers among them engage into the programs of doctoral degrees or master’s degrees, 4 Chinese academicians and more than 20 professors as its part-time professors.   

    At present, the university has 19 master programs in which include 2 first-grade programs and 3 provincial key programs. Its programs cover 7 major academic fields, such as engineering, literature, natural science, economics, education and law. It has 41 majors for bachelor’s degree and 21 for master’s degree. Among them, there are 4 provincial key majors, 7 majors under “state management”, 14 hot majors recommended by Hunan Provincial Government. There are 7 key laboratories and research bases at provincial and ministry levels. Since 2001, the university has already undertaken 34 state-level research programs and 460 programs at provincial and ministerial levels. It has taken 3 state prizes on Science Progress, 76 awards for achievements in science, 44 national patents, 2 state-level teaching achievement awards and 17 provincial teaching awards. Our stronger majors in china are Packaging Engineering, Packaging Design, Packaging Machine, Civil Engineering, Building Environment and Equipment, Art, Electrical Engineerign and Automatization, Measurement and Equipment, and Industrial Design.

Location: The city of Zhuzhou, located 50 km of the south of Changsha (Capital of Hunan Province) and north of Hengyang, and with several railways (including Beijing- Guangzhou, Zhejiang- Kunming) running through, is one of the ten major railway centers in China..
