Red Town, No 570 Huaihai Xilu Road, is one of Shanghai's most famous contemporary art venues, where galleries, night-clubs and livehouses attract the stylish and hip. In a temporary dress room converted from a small gallery office, Chuanju Opera actress, 44-year-old Shen Tiemei, is carefully painting her face.
Neighboring the makeshift dressing room, her band of seven traditional Chuanju Opera musicians are waiting at the corner of the crowded hall, where the German President Horst Kohler and the hundreds of guests attending the celebration dinner for the National Pavilion Day for Germany at the Shanghai Expo, are enjoying champagne, and a German pianist is playing Mozart.
