Housing problem pains young workers in Beijing

Posted 2019/4/29

A survey conducted among 5,000 members of China's "post-80s" generation revealed that nearly 80 percent of young workers cannot afford a residential property in Beijing, the Beijing News reports.

About 75.3 percent of young people who own a home in the country's capital said they rely on their parents' financial support.

Rising home prices in China's big cities have made owning a home nearly unattainable for the country's youth.

More than half of young people living in Beijing are renters, including those holding graduate degrees.

Lian Si, a researcher from the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), says an education advantage plays a limited role in improving living conditions in China.

Statistics show that 84.4 percent of local Beijing youth are forced to live with their parents due to a lack of money for a rental or private home.

Housing has been a main obstacle in marriage and starting a family for young workers; the percentage of unmarried individuals is higher than those who own a home in Beijing.
