BEIJING, March 14 -- Wan Gang, China's Minister of Science and Technology, promised on Wednesday that 500 zero-emission electric-powered vehicles and 500 low-emission, hybrid-fuel vehicles would hit the streets during the Olympics.
"Beijing's emission standards must catch up with their European counterparts," he said while attending a press conference.
The emission standard currently in force is Euro 4, and hybrid vehicles have been put into use.
"We are set to adopt a long term strategy by tapping into the most advanced technologies in the auto industry. Hybrid cars have become a worldwide hit in auto exhibitions."
"The auto industry is liable to reduce emissions and cut energy consumption as energy prices get higher and higher."
"The global auto industry will definitely set their sights on developing energy-saving cars."
