1. In China,sleeper buses are a common means of long-distance transportation. They areslightly more expensive than trains, but also a little faster, and tickets aremore readily available. This service is a good alternative to trains, as seatsin trains get booked well in advance. As the traffic accidents of the sleeperbuses frequently occurred, concerns over its safety increased. In 2011, the relevant authorities started banning the production andsale of such sleeper buses for safety concerns. The sleeper buses era isabout to end.
2. In the late 1980s, China began to develop and producesleeper buses. From 1996 – 1998, the sales of sleeper buses reached the highestlevel. Its annual sales were 72,000,000 then. The photo showed the productionline of sleeper buses in Pingxiang Mining Bureau, Jiangsu province, in 1997.

3. The sleeper buses are the products with Chinese characteristics.Before the highway network was built, the passenger traffic volume of sleeperbuses can top 200,000,000 every year, which eased the tension oftransportation. In the photo, they were the drivers driving the sleeper busfrom Cangnan, Zhejiangto Guilin,Guangxi in 1997.

Until the end of last year, there are more than 30,000 sleeperbuses in service, almost 1, 000, 000 seats and more than 5,000 passenger lines,which almost covered all the town and counties in China. Because the railway networkcannot cover all the places in Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia,etc, the sleeper bus becomes one of the best vehicles for the long-distancetransportation.
