The traditional composition “Ambushed from Ten Sides” 十面埋伏is a clash of armies – you can almost hear the drums, the clang of swords and armor. It is based on a famous episode in Chinese history, the war between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang. They fought a five-year war beginning in 202BC. It was first performed in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
In comparison to general Xiang, Liu was a man with political wisdom. He rewarded his allies with large patches of land. While Xiang was impetuous and arrogant, Liu was sensible and modest. Once, Xiang requested a duel with Liu so that civilians would not have to suffer the war. Knowing that he was not good at fighting, Liu declined the offer and said that he would rather use his brain rather than his strength.
However, the piece describes the story form Liu’s perspective. It emphasizes Liu’s triumph with its impassioned melodies and powerful rhythms.
