As one of the major jade producers in the world, China has a long history of jade mining and rich deposits of jade across the vast country. According to the Shanhaijing (Classic of the Mountains and Seas), there are over 200 jade-rich areas in China. After thousands of years of exploiting, some jade mines are depleted, but exploiting is still underway on a large scale in the most famous jade mines of China, continuously providing raw material for the jade caving industry and promoting the art. The most famous jade-rich area of China is Hetian in Xinjiang. With the largest deposit, best color and best quality, Hetian jade was the most important raw material for ancient jade ware. In addition, Jiuquan jade of Gansu, Lantian jade of Shaanxi, Dushan jade and Mixian jade of Henan, and Xiuyan jade of Liaoning are the usual raw materials for Chinese jade articles.
