          Pilu Temple, a cultural relic site under national protection, is located at the north corner of Shangjong village, to the northwest suburb of the city of Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. First built in the period of Tianbao in the Tang dynasty (742-755), Pilu Temple is a noted Buddhism temple with long history. Many a stone carving and sculpture and kept in it. First built in the period of Tianbao in the Tang dynasty (742-755), Pilu Temple is a noted Buddhism temple with long history. Many a stone carving and sculpture and kept in it. Pilu Temple owes it fame to its collection of delicate religious frescoes of the Ming dynasty.

         Pilu Hall, the main building of the temple, took up an area of 200 square meters. The inside walls were all frescos divided into three rows. Altogether there are 122 groups or pieces of pictures, describing stories of heaven, hell, earth, arhat, Bodhisattva, the god of the earth, the imperial family, loyal and faithful officials, able and virtuous women. Five hundred and eight dramatic persons were portrayed in these frescos and every piece was accompanied by inscription
Frescos in Pilu Hall features in three remarkable aspects as follows: Firstly–its multiplicity of content. Besides the immortals of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism religion, paintings and portrays of the social life and characters are also included. Every immortal and common character contains an allegory, or a fairy tale, which, incarnates the abundance and diversity of Chinese thousands of years’ traditional culture.

        Secondly, the painting skills are exquisite and varied. And there are rich retouching methods and complete kinds of line. By the skillful use and combination of the lines that are painted by the artisan-painter, the picture successfully show the flying ribbons, swinging pleats, moving clouds, abundant and vivid expression and distinct individual character. All of this can make the picture and figures vivid. And it is just the vivid and elegant artistic state that combines the dynamic state and static state. They also use the skill of gilding with the asphalt power of excellent workmanship to protrude the generals’ weapon and armor, Bodhisattvas and goddesses’ head ornaments, which give a distinct three-dimensional effect to the figures. All above come up to the artistic effect both in form and spirit and also add the aesthetic feelings that are beautiful, imposing and dazzling. Thirdly, the fresco is well reserved. The surface of the wall, smooth and sturdy, is a plastered wall that is 1 cm thick. Undergo the changes of six centuries, the pictures on the wall are still well reserved. Its color, bright till today, is varied and harmony. It shows the ancient labors’ intelligence and their superb skills.
