The character “飞”, or “飛” before being simplified, is like a bird’s head on a stretched-out neck in the small seal script ( ), with both wings widely spread below. So, this is a pictographic character with the initial meaning of “a bird in flight”. In the regular script, the character evolved into “飛”, retaining the form in the small seal script. After the simplification of Chinese characters, it became what it is today. The character has the extended meaning of “move in the sky”. It may also refer to a fast-moving state and other similar situations.
