Nicknamed “the boat on the plateau”, the yak is a special bovine species found in Tibetan alpine grasslands. It is mainly distributed in the Himalayan region and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Generally, a yak is dark brown all over the body, with long and thick hair covering both sides, the chest, abdomen and the tail. Its four legs are short and robust.
Yaks live in cold areas 3-5,000 meters above sea level. They can survive the severe cold weather 30-40℃ below zero. Climbing up the glaciers 6,400 meters above sea level is the limitation for them. The yak is the highest altitude living mammal in the world.
