The National Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and Control (NCAIDS), China CDC, Ministry of Health, in Beijing would like to invite applications for a Research Fellow to write research papers from data collected on numerous projects in China, and to contribute to editing and proof reading academic papers and book chapters ready for publication in peer-reviewed journals and print.
Proposed papers to be developed by the Research Fellow may encompass research on HIV and STI epidemiology, methadone maintenance clinics, PLWHA, MSM, NSPs, HIV contact tracing, commercial sex workers and injecting drug users, or may involve social commentaries and history of HIV in China or systematic reviews. The position has the potential to lead to long-term research collaboration with NCAIDS in China.
The ideal applicant will be educated to degree level or above in Epidemiology, Public Health, Clinical Practice or equivalent, with scientific or publishing experience, along with excellent organisational and communication skills. Knowledge of scientific and medical terminology and evidence based health care is desirable. He/she will be a native English speaker, preferably from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia or other English speaking country. It is not necessary for the candidate to be fluent in reading and writing Mandarin Chinese since most of the work will be conducted in English. Chinese researchers at NCAIDS are required to be able to communicate in both Chinese and English.
Essential
· Education to degree level or equivalent skills and experience (Epidemiology, Public Health, Clinical Practice or equivalent)
· Demonstrated administrative, scientific or publishing experience preferably as first author
· Native English speaker preferably from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia or other English speaking country
· Excellent time management skills in prioritising workload of self and others, project management and organisational skills; meet fixed deadlines, initiate and follow-up actions, all with minimal or no supervision
· Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills in English, presentation and negotiation skills; able to assist those whose first language is not English
· A working knowledge of scientific and medical terminology and evidence based healthcare
· Excellent computing skills (including word processing, statistical analytical software, bibliographic databases, spreadsheets, internet and e-mail) and ability to learn new software quickly
· Excellent technical, methodological, copy editing and proofreading skills; attentive to detail
About NCAIDS
The National Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and Control (NCAIDS) was established in July 1998 as part of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM). On January 23rd, 2002 the CAPM was restructured and named the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention of which NCAIDS now currently resides. NCAIDS is the leading agency in the prevention and control of AIDS at the national level.
Technical guidance and training programs for HIV/AIDS prevention and control have been undertaken by NCAIDS since its establishment. A large quantity of research and fieldwork concerning HIV/AIDS epidemiology, surveillance, health education, behavioral intervention, policy, information sharing, care and support, laboratory testing and quality control , international projects as well as vaccine development and immunology has been conducted, which provides the scientific support and foundation for the development of AIDS prevention work and the rational allocation of health resources in China.
Foreign applicants
In addition to the 12,000 monthly salary, the successful foreign applicant will be eligible for an annual return airfare to their home country and a ‘Z’ work visa arranged by NCAIDS. An academic bonus or stipend will also be paid to the successful applicant based on the number of articles or book chapters successfully published in peer reviewed journals or print in one year, to be negotiated with NCAIDS before commencing employment. The Research Fellow will also be required to sign a confidentiality agreement as part of their contract.
