About Shane English School |
Shane English School China (SESC) offers you the opportunity to experience the fascinating and wildly different culture of China first hand with the support and expertise of one of the largest British owned EFL organizations in Asia. SESC was established in
Shanghai in 2000 and has schools in a variety of locations currently employing over 100 academic, and non-academic staff. At present, SESC teaches over 25000 students.
THE STUDENTS
Teachers at SESC enjoy the opportunity to teach students of all ages and abilities, from three year old children to young professionals in companies. Students are grouped by age as well as ability with a maximum of 16 students per class for younger learners and 12 for adult learners.
COURSES
SESC provides tailored courses for every age group varying in difficulty according to the students' needs.
The focus, however, is always on providing an immersive environment in which to learn and student-student communication without the need for translation.
Texts, teacher's books, and necessary materials are available for all courses taught and all Teachers’ Offices provide free internet access. Most schools also provide source materials for supplementary games and worksheets to use in the classroom.
SCHEDULES
All teachers work a regular schedule of 5 days per week. Where a sixth day is worked a choice is given for it to be taken at a later date as time off in lieu, or to be paid as a bonus in the following month's salary.
The average schedule consists of 18-22 contact hours per week and split shifts are avoided wherever possible.
TRAINING AND INDUCTION
Regardless of experience and/or qualifications all new teachers receive a week's paid training prior to beginning their full teaching schedule.
The training is aimed mainly at the teaching of young learners with focus on areas such as the teaching of reading and writing, classroom management, implementation of activities, and lesson planning. Trainees will also observe the classes of experienced teachers to see how the theory works in practice.
SUPPORT
Teachers will always have a senior member of staff with whom they can discuss any aspects of their work. Also, each school has a full time welfare officer to help teachers settle smoothly into living in China and provide ongoing assistance on all matters that may otherwise prove difficult with the language barrier.
ACCOMMODATION
Varies in price depending on city, location, and whether the apartment is shared or not. The range is from 1200-2000RMB per month and utilities are very cheap.
